Getting out and about

WHAT TO DO IN THE AREA

There is an abundance of things to do for those who want to get out and explore the area, in fact too many to mention but here are just some ideas.

Visit the seaside town of Byron Bay or the historic town of Uki!  A drive to Tayalgum for coffee all while enjoying the views of Mount Warning.

Hikes and walks with views near La Rocher

There are numerous national parks in the area. A drive along the Border Ranges National Park to the look-out point on the elevated platform high above the soaring rainforest trees and valley below makes a memorable outing. Please allow 4-5 hours for this trip.

Visit the mini “Giants Causeway” of columnar formed from columnar basalt flow at Fingal Head. This is also a good whale-watching site. Other national parks include Mount Jerusalem National Park, Lamington National Park, and Springbook National Park with the inspiring waterfall cascading into the cave at the Nature bridge.

Cabarita beach

Beaches and seaside towns

  • One is spoilt for choice with our world class beaches with soft white sands, azure waters and the opportunity to swim for most of the year. Rainbow Bay, Kingscliff, Cabarita Beach (our favourite) and Byron Bay are some of the closest beaches to us. All those beaches are 1/2 hr to 45 minutes away.
  • Visit the vibrant seaside town of Byron Bay with a plethora of restaurants, coffee shops, art galleries and boutique clothing shops. Following that, a visit to the Lighthouse as the most easterly point of Australia is a must. This can be finished off with a hike down to the rocks and exquisite little coves below.
  • Whale watching! This coastline bursts into life between April and November, as the Southern Hemisphere humpback whales migrate to the temperate tropical waters to calve. The lookout points at Rainbow bay, Cabarita Headland and Byron Bay afford great opportunities to spot these giants of the ocean.

Take a drive

  • A half hour drive to the quaint Town of Tayalgum with its delightful coffee shops and scenic setting makes a delightful half day outing.
  • Then there are the lovely restaurants on the narrow road to Mount Warning. Amongst these is the ever popular MAVIS’S KITCHEN, with a well established reputation for fabulous dining and an excellent menu with its own home grown herbs, vegetables and fruits.

Pipit Restaurant

Try out Pipit Restaurant 30 minutes away in Pottsville, awarded the Best Regional Restaurant in 2019 (amongst many other awards). It will delight you with their bespoke menu, crafted by their master Chefs Ben Devlin and his wife Yen Trinh.
Mount Warning
UKI Cafe

Historic Town

The small Historic Town of Uki was named after timber exported from the region to the UK, export grade 1 quality.

The town is a mere 5 minutes away by car and Village & Co and Uki Love both offer great meals. The Historic Post Office has been restored to its former glory and now also operates as an Art Gallery and an in-house Coffee shop, BASTION LANE. Its beans are sourced from the cool, high-altitude mountains of South America and are roasted to perfection on the premises.

A must is the highly informative free coffee roasting tour on Thursday mornings.

The Mount Warning Hotel and Pub in Uki serves as a favourite drinking hole for the locals with pub food served as well.

The local town of Murwillumbah, a 15-minute drive away has many fabulous coffee shops and a variety of restaurants. There, you can choose from fabulous Thai, Vietnamese, Italian, and local Aussie fare to a French bakery and traditional Aussie steaks amongst others.

High on our list of recommendations is a visit to the Tweed Regional Gallery and Margaret Olley Art Centre. Her original cottage has been beautifully recreated inside the gallery. Follow this with tea and scones on the deck of the resident coffee shop overlooking the beautiful Tweed Valley.
